BENEFITS OF FERTILIZERS IN AGRICULTURE
Fertilizers play an important role
for plant growth in the initial stages of growth. Fertilizers are materials of
synthetic or organic substances which are applied to the soil or on the plant
for supplying essential plant nutrients for plant growth. Fertilizers when
added to the soil or water plants get nutrition to fight against insects,
disease etc. so, fertilizers reduces the need of herbicides and pesticides.
Besides these, soil condition is
another big problem of agriculture. Lack of water is one of the major issues of
agriculture. Uneven distribution of rainfall or long breaks of rainy season due
to change in weather causes either excessive amount of rainfall or deficiency
in water in nurturing time. Fertilizers help plants to beat these situations by
increasing their capabilities to hold more water and improve the depth of the
root. The potassium in the fertilizer
makes the stalks and straw of the plant stronger.
Fertilizers work like a mentor of a
plant. It not only promotes healthy growth of the plant it also act as
developer. The nitrogen part of fertilizer acts as growth booster which is
considered by the green color of plants. Phosphorus helps in the faster
formation of seeds.
Two types of fertilizers are applied
to the plant i.e. solid or liquid. Ninety percent of fertilizer used as
powdered or granulated form. Anhydrous ammonia, aqueous ammonia nitrate
solutions, urea etc are liquid fertilizers. These products can be diluted by
using water for forming liquid fertilizers.
In India the use of fertilizers
become popular when in 1967 Indian farmers fertilizers cooperatives stared
their operation. They started with 57 cooperative but today it reaches over
36,000 cooperative. It enables farmer to provide timely supply of reliable,
high quality fertilizer. IFFCO MD Dr.U S Awasthi
established IFFCO as a global leader in fertilizer industry. Under his leadership
IFFCO has enters on all fronts and diversified into many sectors.
Some important fertilizers made by
IFFCO are urea, NP, NPK, DAP, water soluble fertilizers, bio fertilizers etc.
other important benefits of fertilizers are: 1) fertilizers increase the
protein content in the plant 2) fertilizers increase vitamin C and solid
soluble content, 3) it increases flavor and color of the fruit. 4) it enhances
shipping and storage quality of the food crop.
The importance of fertilizers stretches in every corner of our
planet. Lack of supply for food would be evident without them.
U S Awasthi is presently Managing
Director of IFFCO , the largest cooperative in India. He was born in 1945
and holds a degree in chemical engineering.
